Andy Warhol

RETROSUPERFUTURE and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts have been collaborating since 2016, bringing Andy Warhol's iconic visual legacy to life through collectible eyewear. Each chapter of the partnership draws on a different aspect of Warhol's archive — from 1950s commercial illustrations to late-career self-portraits — translating his spirit into contemporary silhouettes crafted in Italy.
The RSF / Andy Warhol twelfth collaboration, Bubbles, was born and inspired by a drawing created by the master of Pop art in the 1950s when Warhol was amongst the most coveted commercial illustrators in New York City. The sketch depicts a pair of round glasses, half white and half black, with very round lenses, hence the name.

To celebrate RSF's 11th collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, we were inspired by Andy's 1954 drawing "Happy Bug Day." Many see this work as an important moment in the artist's career as it caught international attention. We too fell in love with this design — so much that we took three of these cute bugs and placed them on the temple of an eyewear design that is truly oversized and exuberant in its pop playfulness.

RETROSUPERFUTURE presents the latest iteration in its ongoing collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The ninth edition sees the interpretation of a silhouette worn by the great American artist in the 1960s. Andy Warhol's personal style was a central part of his artistic identity, and as such remains an essential way of understanding his reality. This year, RSF has created this exclusive silhouette revisiting the original design for a sharper contemporary approach by adding two elegant metal knife decors — from the Warhol series commonly referred to as Knives (c.1981-82), on each temple.

To celebrate the fifth chapter of the collaboration between RSF and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the collection draws inspiration from Warhol's iconic 1960s Flowers works and from a fanciful sketch of floral sunglasses dating back to the early 1950s, when he was devoted to illustration. The project reinterprets the Drew and Drew Mama silhouettes through vivid prints and sculptural volumes, translating archival references into contemporary eyewear. Drew Mama offers a playful, colourful take on the Flowers series through a refined acetate printing technique, while Drew reinterprets Warhol's illustration with pink hues and a vibrant feminine attitude.

To celebrate the fourth chapter of the collaboration between RSF and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the collection draws inspiration from a 1950s motif sourced from the Foundation's New York archives: a series of freehand drawings of pupils and eyes Warhol created during his years as a commercial illustrator. Reinterpreting these elegant soft-line drawings in three-dimensional form, the project features two ironic sunglasses that sit at the intersection of art and design. Combining high-tech structural construction, innovative materials and experimental details, the models transform Warhol's eye sketches into collectible eyewear designed for design lovers and art enthusiasts.

To celebrate the second chapter of the collaboration between RSF and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the collection carries Warhol's legacy into the 21st century through an eclectic eyewear line inspired by his art. Exploring the Foundation's archives, RSF selected a series of whimsical ink drawings Warhol created in 1957 for a newspaper article on women's eyewear, portraying elegant female figures with bold, mysterious 1950s-style sunglasses. Translating these sketches into three-dimensional form, the project experiments with materials, shapes and production techniques to create a collectible yet wearable set of four unconventional models: BabyBaby, Nicolou, VelvetDarling and Ultracandy — capturing Warhol's witty visual flair and his idea of transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary.

To celebrate the first chapter of RSF's collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the collection brings together Warhol's original artworks and RSF's distinctive design language. Exploring the Foundation's archives, RSF selected the Photobooth Self-Portrait series, a bold and witty body of work immediately recognized as the perfect starting point for this artsy eyewear line. Merging the artist's irony with the brand's innovative approach to design, the project reproduces a collage of four different self-portraits on an elegant silver acetate sheet, reminiscent of the silver gelatin prints used in vintage film photography, applied on the inner side of each frame. The front is rendered in a sleek metallic grey acetate, resulting in a refined interpretation of four timeless RSF silhouettes, América, Classic, Ciccio and Drew.
